We hold beginning square dance lessons twice a year beginning in September and January.  

We teach what is called Social Square Dance or SSD. No prior dance experience is needed. Couples, singles, and families are welcome. A partner is not required (we typically pair singles with an experienced dancer). These are weekly lessons held for 12 weeks.

When: Weekly from mid-September thru mid-December and mid-January to mid-April  each year.

Time: Tuesday evenings from 6:30 - 8:00 pm.

Cost: $6 per lesson for adults. If you pay up front for all 12 lessons the cost is $50, a savings of $22.  Children under 18 are free.

Attire: Casual (no special square dance outfits required).

Location: Odd Fellows Hall, 1694 354 Ave., Wever, IA.  It’s just behind the post office on the main road through town. (Google Maps thinks it’s the Post Office and marks it as such. ) Click the box below for a map of the location.

After lessons each week, we have a dance for experienced dancers. An ‘experienced dancer’ is anyone who has completed our 12 week SSD classes or beyond. (Experienced dancers are encouraged to join in the lessons too, as “Angels”, to help our newcomers.)

All other weeks of the year when lessons are not held, we have Weekly Dances.  Experienced dancers, visiting dancers, and new graduates are welcome at all these dances.   These are SSD dances with an occasional mainstream call.

When: Weekly all year on Tuesday evenings

Time: Summer and weeks without lessons: 6:30 - 8:30 pm.  During lessons: held after lessons 8:00 - 9:30ish.

Cost: $6 per dance for adults.  Children under 18 are free.  (If you came for a lesson, you don’t pay extra to stay for the regular dance.)

Attire:  Casual

Throughout the year we hold Special Dances.  These are of two types. Themed dances and guest callers.

Themed dances:  Once a month we hold “Big Skirt” dances.  We invite everyone to dress up in square dance outfits: big skirts for ladies and cowboy attire for men.  Dress as you feel comfortable and enjoy the swirl of Big Skirts!  

These may take place on holidays with everyone wearing holiday-themed costumes: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras, and St. Patrick’s Day.  Members are encouraged to bring holiday-themed food to share.  At Christmas we have a potluck dinner prior to dancing.

Guest Callers:  Several times throughout the year, we have guest callers.  These dances may be on our regular Tuesday night dance time, or on a weekend afternoon.  Some of these callers will also include Mainstream and Plus dances.
